TL;DR
A report by Ideal Home says pest experts recommend diluted eucalyptus essential oil as a scent-based way to discourage spiders from settling indoors during the UK’s autumn spider season. They describe it as a preventive measure, not a complete solution, and advise sealing gaps and reducing clutter and damp.
Ideal Home has reported that pest experts recommend using diluted eucalyptus essential oil as one way to discourage spiders from settling inside UK homes during autumn. The experts describe the scent as a preventive deterrent, not a guaranteed way to keep spiders out, and say it should be paired with practical steps such as closing gaps around doors and windows.
In the report, Shield Pest Control managing director Dan Steward says spiders respond to chemical cues through receptors on their legs, and that a strong scent such as eucalyptus may interfere with how they navigate. He says the scent can make an area less inviting. The source presents this as expert advice; it does not cite a controlled test measuring how well eucalyptus repels spiders in homes.
Mosh Latifi, co-owner of EcoCare Pest Management, recommends diluting 15 to 20 drops of eucalyptus oil in a spray bottle of water. The report suggests applying it along skirting boards, window and door frames, and corners where spiders are often seen. Latifi says the spray should be refreshed every week or two as its scent fades.
Latifi also suggests placing fresh eucalyptus branches near entry points or diffusing eucalyptus oil in rooms where spiders are active. The report characterizes these as alternatives to spraying surfaces. It does not give a water volume for the spray or provide specific instructions about surface compatibility, so readers should follow the oil product’s label and test an inconspicuous spot before applying it to household materials.
A Scent Is Only One Layer
The advice offers households seeking to avoid harsher pest-control products a low-cost measure that also has a fresh, spa-like smell, according to the report. But its practical value depends on expectations: the experts frame eucalyptus as a way to make indoor spaces less inviting, rather than a method that prevents every spider from entering.
That distinction matters because scent does not close the routes spiders use to get indoors. Steward recommends combining it with sealing small gaps around doors and windows, reducing clutter and damp, and regularly removing webs and egg sacs. Those steps address conditions and access points that a fragrance alone cannot change.
Autumn Spider Advice in the UK
The Ideal Home article frames the recommendation around the UK’s autumn spider season, when readers may notice more spiders indoors. It says native UK spiders are not dangerous to people, while acknowledging that many residents would prefer not to share their homes with them. The report focuses on a humane, chemical-free approach based on scent.
The experts’ advice sits alongside household measures rather than replacing them. The article also suggests closing windows and doors after 7 p.m. to reduce possible entry through those openings. It offers no data on how much that timing changes the number of spiders entering a home, so it is best understood as a practical suggestion from the source, not a quantified result.
““Scent-based deterrents help make a home less inviting, but they won’t seal the gaps spiders are getting through.””
— Dan Steward, as quoted by Ideal Home

How Well the Scent Works
The report does not provide trial results, a measured success rate or comparisons with other spider-control methods. It is therefore unclear how reliably eucalyptus spray changes spider activity in different homes, and the source does not establish that it will keep spiders out. It also does not specify the amount of water to use or assess possible effects on particular surfaces, pets or household members.

Pair Spray With Home Checks
Latifi’s advice is to refresh the spray every week or two, while Steward recommends checking for gaps around windows and doors, reducing clutter and damp, and clearing webs and egg sacs. The source gives no schedule for those home checks or further evidence about the spray’s effectiveness. Readers who try it can follow the product label and assess whether the scent-based measure is useful in their own home.
